Maragheh “Goychah” Castle, Reminiscent of first Millennium

TEHRAN Jan. 13 (Mehr News Agency) –- Goychah Castle is an old military castle dating from the first millennium B.C.

The historical castle located 15km from Maragheh, East Azerbaijan Province, beside the Quri Chay River and the village Goychah Qal’eh is considered one of the main tourist attractions in the city.

Covering an area of almost one hectare with a height of 400m, it is comprised of different sections with a water cellar, food storage, several stairs excavated in the heart of the rock, as well as several beautiful engravings.

The water cellar is an amazing part of the castle; it is still full of water after thousands of years. The discovery of gray clay vessels and lusterware proves the castle was in fact used beyond the first millennium B.C.
